Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Greetings in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
The story of Jeremiah reminds us that even in the darkest of times, God remains faithful to His covenant. When Jerusalem was under siege by the Babylonians, destruction was imminent, and exile seemed certain, God gave Jeremiah a message of hope. In the face of despair, He assured His people that their story was not over.
I’m reminded of an experience of my own. In the early 2000s, I bought a house in a small town in Limpopo. Soon after, I relocated to Johannesburg and decided to rent the house out. After some challenges with tenants, I eventually sold it. At the time, the town felt hopeless. Businesses were leaving, and the future looked bleak.
But just a couple of years later, everything changed. A major development was announced, property prices skyrocketed, and the town began to flourish again. Looking back, I wish I had known what was coming! I wish God whispered to me what he told Jeremiah. Or perhaps he did, and I was not listening.
That’s what makes Jeremiah’s story so powerful. While he was imprisoned by King Zedekiah, God told him to buy land in Jerusalem—even though the city was about to be destroyed and its people were about to be exiled. By human logic, it made no sense. Yet Jeremiah obeyed because he trusted God’s promise: “Houses, fields and vineyards will again be bought in this land” (Jeremiah 32:15).
Our world today can feel just as hopeless. Wars rage on, corruption seems rampant, infrastructure is collapsing, and even basic services like water are failing in many places. It’s easy to grow weary, discouraged, and fearful.
But here’s the good news: God is still on His throne. His promises are sure. His purposes will prevail. Like Jeremiah, we are called to trust that God is working even when circumstances say otherwise.
So I ask you: Are you discouraged? Have you lost hope? Let’s lift our eyes from the chaos around us and fix them firmly on the One who holds the future. He has not abandoned us and the world, and He never will.
My prayer for this week is that we may never lose hope in the face of adversity, but instead live with the quiet confidence that our faithful God is writing a story of redemption far greater than we can see right now. Amen!
