Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Greetings in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Many years ago, as we were beginning to grasp that the gospel is Christ-centred, a member once asked me in frustration:
“What is this ‘Jesus, Jesus’ about? I am tired of hearing about Jesus. Let’s preach the kingdom of God!”
I cannot even remember how I responded at the time. But what I do know is this: the centrality of Jesus to the Christian message can never be overemphasised. If we downplay Jesus, we are left with a counterfeit gospel. Jesus Christ is the gospel. He did not merely give us a gospel to proclaim. He is the gospel we proclaim.
As I read one of this week’s scriptures, this truth leapt out again:
“Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, in keeping with the promise of life that is in Christ Jesus, To Timothy, my dear son: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.” (2 Tim. 1:1–2 NIV)
Notice how Paul keeps naming Christ Jesus or the Lord. In fact, throughout 2 Timothy he refers to Christ Jesus more than thirty times. For Paul, there was no doubt who mattered most. Christ was everything.
The same is clear in 1 Corinthians:
“We preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.” (1 Cor. 1:23–24)
This is our message too. We do not preach ourselves, a set of rules, or even an abstract idea of “the kingdom.” We preach Christ, who is the power and wisdom of God. He is the revelation of who God is. If we have any hope of knowing God, it is in the face of Jesus that we must look.
And once we truly know this Jesus, like Paul and the other apostles did, our lives will never be the same.
My prayer this week is that we may all be drawn to know this Jesus more deeply, and may His life transform ours. Amen!
PRAYER REQUESTS:

Have a blessed weekend!
Shalom!
Takalani
