HANNAH: A WOMAN OF FAITH SHAPED BY GRACE

‘I prayed for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of

him. So now I give him to the Lord. For his whole life he shall be given

over to the Lord.’ And he worshipped the Lord there.’

1 SAMUEL 1:27-28 (NIVUK)

Hannah stands among the extraordinary women of scripture not because of her

social status, influence, or achievements, but because her life became a testimony

to the grace and faithfulness of God. Her story, recorded in 1 Samuel 1-2, reveals a

woman who brought her deepest pain before the Lord and discovered that God’s

grace is greater than human disappointment.

For many years Hannah endured the sorrow of childlessness, a burden that was

compounded by misunderstanding and ridicule (1 Samuel 1:6). Yet despite her

‘deep anguish’ (v.10) she didn’t become bitter but turned repeatedly to God in

prayer. She poured out her heart before him, trusting that he saw her suffering even

when others didn’t.

Hannah’s story reminds us that God is not distant from human struggles. The

Father, revealed through Jesus Christ, draws near to those who are broken-hearted.

Hannah did not earn God’s favour through her persistence; her prayers were

answered through God’s gracious initiative and loving purpose.

When God granted Hannah a son, Samuel, she responded not with self-

congratulation but with worship. Her song in 1 Samuel 2 celebrates the God who

lifts up the humble, cares for the needy, and reverses human expectations. These

themes point forward to the ministry of Jesus Christ, in whom God’s grace is fully

revealed. Just as Hannah rejoiced in God’s saving acts, believers today rejoice in

the greater gift God has given – the salvation and reconciliation of humanity

through Christ.

Hannah teaches us that faith is not merely asking God for blessings: it is entrusting

ourselves to his will. She surrendered Samuel back to God because she recognised

that every gift ultimately belongs to him (1 Samuel 1:28). In the same way,

Christians are invited to participate in the life and mission of Jesus, offering

themselves in grateful response to the grace they have already received.

Her life also encourages us to bring our needs honestly before God, to trust his

timing, and to worship him whether our circumstances are easy or difficult.

Hannah’s story is ultimately not about human achievement but about the

faithfulness of a gracious God who hears, restores, and invites his children into his

purposes.

Hannah’s story demonstrates that God’s grace is often at work even in seasons

when we cannot yet see the outcome. Her journey from sorrow to joy encourages

us to trust the Lord with our deepest longings, knowing that he hears every prayer

and remains faithful to his promises. In Jesus Christ, we have the assurance that

God is always working for our good (Romans 8:28) and drawing us into a deeper

relationship with himself. Whatever challenges we may face, Hannah’s example

calls us to persevere in faith, rest in God’s unfailing love, and live with confidence

that his grace is sufficient for every season of life. May we, like Hannah, become

people whose lives bear witness to the faithfulness, goodness, and abundant grace

of God.

Prayer

Loving Father, thank you for the example of Hannah, a woman who trusted you

in the middle of deep sorrow and uncertainty. Thank you that you are a God who

hears our prayers, knows our struggles, and surrounds us with your grace.

Through Jesus, you have shown us your perfect love and faithfulness. Help us to

trust that your grace is sufficient for all our needs, in Jesus’s name, Amen.
